Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law a measure that stiffens the penalty for drivers stopped for texting while driving. Beginning in July 2019, drivers will not only get fined $75 for the first offense of texting while driving, but the offense will also count as a moving violation and could lead to a license suspension.
Secretary of State Jesse White said in a statement, “No driver should be texting while driving. With the increased use of technological devices, distracted driving has become a serious problem on the roads of our state and throughout the nation.”
Recent reports show that texting while driving is more dangerous than drunk driving. In 2013 alone, 3,154 people were killed in car accidents involving distracted driving, with about 424,000 people being injured.
More states are cracking down on texting while driving, and Illinois officials hope this new law will further encourage safe driving practices.
